From April 1, an agreement on the protection of Georgian products in the zone of the European Union becomes effective. The EU has completed all the procedures necessary for the agreement on "geographical indications for agricultural products and foodstuffs" concluded with Georgia to come into effect.

According to Georgian Statistics Service, "the agreement aims at the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin of products registered in Georgia in the territory of the EU member states. Within the agreement 18 designations of Georgian wine production: "Khvanchkara", "Kindzmarauli", "Tsinandali", "Gurjaani", "Manavi", "Kakheti", "Kardenakhi", "Mukuzani", "Teliani", "Ateni "" Napareuli "," Sviri"," Tvishi "," Akhasheni","Kotekhi "," Kvareli "," Vazisubani " and "Tibaani" will be protected.

In turn, more than 3,000 designations of products produced in the EU countries will be protected in the Georgian territory. Therefore, from April 1, 2012, the Georgian side will have a specific legal framework that will preserve the high quality of Georgian products and its protection against fraud.

The agreement also envisages possible increase in the designations, which is very important, as Georgia continues registration of geographical indications and designations of origin, and recently registered designations will be submitted to the EU in the near future, Georgian Statistics Service said.
