Iran is expected to generate 1000 megawatt of electricity annually using new energies between 2016 and 2021, An Iranian energy official predicted.

Arash Kordi, a director of Iran Power Generation and Transmission Company (TAVANIR) has said that currently the country generates less than 300 megawatt of electricity using wind and solar energies.

He called for generating electricity in the country using new energies and said the country's power industry requires support.

He further urged for using geographical information system (GIS) in the country's power industry.

Iran's power generation capacity currently stands at around 74,000 MW, of that some 12,000 MW is generated via hydroelectric power plants, 1000 MW via nuclear power plant and the remaining is produced by thermal power plants.

According to the latest annual report Iran's capacity of producing renewable energy stands at 232 megawatts, 0.31 percent of the country's total power generation capacity.

Earlier in February, Homayoun Haeri, an official with TAVANIR, said ten percent of Iran's electricity needs will be met by solar and wind power plants by 2022.

He added that Iranian solar and wind power plants will generate 12,000 MW of electricity annually.
