Turkmen GDP grows in 2017

Turkmenistan’s GDP grew 6.5 percent in 2017, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at the final governmental meeting, Turkmenistan State News Agency reported Jan. 27.

“We are making investments worth about $50 billion in the Turkmen economy,” he said.

In 2017, the volume of exported products grew 6.6 percent, he added.

“Presently, about 1,700 big facilities worth more than $42 billion are being built in the country,” the head of state said.

Turkmenistan’s GDP rose in industry by 5.5 percent, in construction – by 1.3 percent, in transport and communications sector – by 11.1 percent, in trade – by 9.4 percent, in agriculture – by 5 percent, and in services sector – by 9 percent.

In 2017, the growth rate of production reached 6.4 percent, and the volume of retail trade turnover grew 19 percent in comparison with 2016.

According to BP, Turkmenistan ranks fourth in the world for its natural gas reserves. The country supplies gas to China and Iran. Turkmenistan is diversifying its economy, developing the textile and oil products industry, actively developing oil and gas chemical industries and the industry for the production of construction materials.
