New hybrid varieties of grain crops have been brought to Azerbaijan from Turkey, the Director of the Agrarian Research Center under the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan Parviz Hajiyev told Trend.

The new varieties are presently being studied by experts for quality and crop capacity.

According to Hajiyev, new hybrid varieties of grain crops imported into the country are not GMOs, and mainly are wheat and barley varieties.

"Presently we are conducting research to identify the positive and negative properties of new crops in agriculture. It is still difficult to predict how hybrid varieties can take root and give a good harvest. Even if the varieties can take root, they can still lack high crop productivity. Therefore, the new planting material is subjected to rigorous testing by leading experts in this field," the director said.

Hajiyev noted that presently hybrid varieties of wheat and barley are imported from Turkey, and new varieties of potatoes and garlic are supplied from Russia.

According to the State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan, in January-September 2018, the harvest of spring crops continued in the country. At the beginning of October, more than three million tons of grain and leguminous crops (not including corn) were harvested from the fields. From each hectare of the field 29.2 centners of products were harvested. In addition, during the reporting period, 151,000 tons of corn were harvested from a field of 24,100 hectares.

During the reporting period, 852,800 tons of potatoes were harvested (1.1 percent decrease over the year).
