Plastic cards number grows in Kazakhstan year-on-year

The number of plastic cards in circulation amounted to 38.8 million cards as of Jun. 1, 2020, which is 54.6 percent more than as of Jun. 1, 2019 (25.09 million cards), Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s National Bank.

Of the total number of cards in circulation, 30.8 million cards were debit cards, 6.6 million cards were credit cards, and 1.3 million were other types of cards.

Furthermore, of the total number of cards in circulation, 21.2 million were used over as of Jun. 1, 2020, compared to 13.6 million cards last year, which indicates a 55.3 percent increase year-on-year.

The largest number of debit cards in circulation was registered in Almaty city (7.3 million cards). Almaty city is followed by Turkestan region, including Shymkent city (3.3 million cards), and Nur-Sultan city (3.1 million cards).

In turn, the greatest number of credit cards also was registered in Almaty city (1.5 million cards), which also is followed by Turkestan region (717,600 cards) and Nur-Sultan city (698,900 cards).

Some 33.2 million card holders were registered in Kazakhstan as of Jun. 1, 2020, which indicates an increase by 52.3 percent year-on-year compared to 21.8 million in Jun. 1, 2019.

A total of 3.1 million transfers worth 55.9 trillion tenge ($138.3 billion) were made via services of Kazakhstan’s National Bank payment systems in May 2020.

The total number of payment systems operating in Kazakhstan as of Jun. 1, 2020, consists of 17 systems, including those of National Bank, systems of money transfers and systems of plastic cards.
