Georgia expects rich apple harvest

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept.9

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

To assist farmers in the Georgian region of Shida Kartli in the implementation of the harvest of non-standard apples, a coordination headquarters is operating in the city of Gori, Trend reports via the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture.

Large apple harvest is expected in Georgia this year - more than 120,000 tons, mainly in the Shida Kartli region. However, there will be a high harvest of apples all over the world, so the government decided to take certain measures to support farmers and companies involved in fruit processing.

"The coordinating headquarters will work in Gori to ensure smooth apple processing. Compared to last year, this year's apple harvest will be three times higher. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the prices of apples has been reduced worldwide. So that the interests of our farmers are taken into account and their work is appreciated, we decided to help the private sector process the maximum amount of apples," said Minister of Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili.

To increase the purchasing power of companies, working capital will be co-financed, in particular, the state will fully finance the percentage of the loan taken by the company for the purchase of apples within the framework of the "Preferential agricultural loan" project. Companies can take out a loan until November 21, and a part of the interest of this loan will be financed by the state.

The ministry also said that this year the projected yield of newly planted orchards under the "Implement the Future" program is more than 10,000 tons, and in 2021 more than 20,000 tons of apples are expected in new orchards.
