Turkmenistan proposing to create UN Energy Council

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Nov. 29

By Huseyn Hasanov – Trend:

Turkmenistan suggests setting up a special body - the UN Energy Council and the UN expert group on energy security issues, Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister Maksat Babayev said in Ashgabat Nov. 29 at the 28th session of the Energy Charter Conference.

“The current situation in the energy sector of the world economy makes it necessary to develop and adopt the UN Convention on energy security,” he said.

For Turkmenistan, diversification of transport infrastructure that can ensure the delivery of energy resources to international markets through the creation of an extensive network of a multivariate pipeline system is the strategic priority of ensuring energy security, he noted.

“The implementation of this strategic direction envisages comprehensive development of energy cooperation not only among energy supplying, transit and consumer countries, but also among interested parties and international organizations, in particular the UN and the Energy Charter,” Babayev said.

Turkmenistan is one of key players in the gas market of the Caspian region and Central Asia. Currently, the country exports natural gas to China and Iran.
