Mansour Bazmi, acting chief of Iran's Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI), said the country has constructed a crude oil refinery in Indonesia.

“The refinery was built (in Indonesia) by Iranian knowledge-based companies,” Bazmi told ISNA.

Noting that Iran plans to expand its overseas projects in the field of oil industry, he said, “We are seeking to develop the technology used in the refinery”.

He added that a similar refinery has been set up in Syria.

Several production units, including gas sweetening, isomerization, and odorant will be soon launched in the country’s refineries, Bazmi said.

Back in 2015, Rudy Rajab, the president of Iran-Indonesia Trade Commission, said that Iran would provide 30 percent of the funds required for the refinery project.

At the time, Indonesia had about one million bpd of refining capacity that met about two-thirds of its demand. It had to import more than 500,000 bpd of fuel products to fill the gap. Therefore, it was eager to expand its refining capacity to be less dependent on oil imports, and was seeking Iran's assistance.

Based on an original plan, the refinery was to have a refinery capacity of 300,000 bpd.
