Uzbekistan began to transit electricity from Tajikistan to Afghanistan, Uzbek media reported on Friday.

According to the information, 140 million kW/h of electricity was already sent to Afghanistan via the networks of the Surkhandarya energy center.

“We signed an additional agreement with Uzbekenergo on transit of electricity to Afghanistan. The energy systems of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are currently working in a replacement mode, but in the near future we will completely restore the parallel work mode. There is a corresponding instruction of the intergovernmental commission of the two countries,” Chairman of the Tajik national energy company Barki Tojik Ismoilzoda Mirzo Ibrokhim said.

The head of the company also added that the electricity supplies to Afghanistan are closely connected with restoration of the existing power transmission line in the territory of this country and, once it is resolved, the sides will continue discussion on further cooperation in this direction.

According to Ibrokhim, Tashkent and Dushanbe have signed a contract on supply of 1.5 billion kW/h of electricity from Tajikistan to Uzbekistan in 2018.

Chairman of the Board of Uzbekenergo Ulugbek Mustafayev earlier said that Uzbekistan and Tajikistan restored the parallel work mode of the energy systems of the two countries 2018. According to the head of the Uzbek company, Uzbekistan is actively working to join Afghanistan to the unified energy ring of Central Asia.
