Azerbaijani Communications Minister Announces Priority Projects for 2008

Azerbaijan, Baku, 16 January / Trend corr S. Babayeva / On 16 January, Ali Abbasov, the Azerbaijani Communications and IT Minister, announced the priorities of activities in the IT field for 2008.

The major task for this year is to increase the number of stationary phone sets, to introduce new technologies in Baku and in the other regions, to expand the IP telephony usage, to implement the 'Electronic Government' project, to commence implementation of the regional innovation area project -envisaging the creation of a technical fleet, international IT university and a transit centre, the Minister said at the meeting dedicated to the results of 2007.

The plans of the Ministry includes, advancing the project on launching the national communication satellite - AzerSat, implementation of the 'People's Computer' project -envisaging the popularization of the internet in the country, and the liberalization and privatization of the communication market.

"We have very large and important projects for implementation in the year 2008. These are very necessary for the development of IT," the Minister said.

The Ministry has developed 17 projects.
