Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has ordered to develop a strategy for the Caspian region at a meeting of the Security Council today, the presidential press service said today.

"It is time to analyse the completed work and to develop a strategy for the future development of the region," Nazarbayev said.

The president said that the development of Kazakhstan's Caspian littoral areas must be uniform and comprehensive.

"The Caspian littoral areas are the main zone of hydrocarbon production, as well as Kazakhstan's sole marine gateway," Nazarbayev said.

Moreover, it is necessary to consider developing tourism and preserving the ecology of the Caspian region in terms of infrastructure.

The issues of the industrialisation of the Caspian littoral areas, employment, providing the population with drinking water, tourism development were discussed at the meeting. The need to protect the environment and biological diversity of the Caspian Sea, preventing water pollution, including oil spills was emphasised.

Other issues of regional and international security were also discussed.
