Iranian Presidential Special Representative for Caspian Sea Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister Mehdi Safari was appointed the country's new ambassador to China, Mehr reported.

Iranian Presidential Special Representative for Caspian Sea Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister Mehdi Safari was appointed the country's new ambassador to China, Mehr reported.

"Safari must pass the approval process for the post of ambassador, so before his inauguration, he will continue to serve as President's Special Representative for Caspian Sea Affairs," Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told Trend over the telephone.

Her did not name the timing of the necessary procedures, but noted that Safari will assume duties until Jan.26, 2011 (New Year on the Chinese calendar). He also added that the candidature for the post of President's Special Representative for Caspian Sea Affairs has not yet been selected.

Javad Mansouri was the last Iranian ambassador to China. Iran hasn't had a new ambassador since his tenure expired two years ago.
