Former Foreign Minister of Iran, Ebrahim Yazdi was sentenced to 8 years in prison, Yazdi's lawyer said, according to opposition website Rahesabz.

Yazdi, 79, was foreign minister in 1979 in the first post-revolution cabinet of Prime Minister Mehdi Bazargan.

He resigned after radical students occupied the United States embassy in Tehran and after his call to end the occupation was rejected by the new ruling clergy establishment in Iran.

Following the disputed presidential election last year and fraud charges against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his government, several former reformist officials have been arrested.

Most have received long jail sentences after being charged with plans to topple the Islamic establishment.
