The Georgian leadership will do everything to ensure that Darejan Kohtashvili serves her sentence at home, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said on Monday in Kvareli, where he invited the Bulgarian PM to his vineyard.

The president said "replacing the death penalty by six years imprisonment is a great relief, and now the work is on the case of Babutsi Gordadze".

"All this time the Justice Ministry, the diplomatic corps have worked without a break and thought about the tragic fate of these two women. I want to say that Deputy Chief Prosecutor David Sakvarelidze has done a lot to change the punishment of Kohtashvili. Now he is working on
the case of Babutsi Gordadze," Saakashvili said.

The president said it clearly demonstrates that Georgia will never abandon its citizens.

"Time when there was a mess and irresponsibility in the country, has passed. Citizens of Georgia did not have advocate, their fate didn't concern government and at least a small part of the diplomatic corps," said the head of state.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry expects the mitigation of the punishment of Gordadze, who was detained in Malaysia on charges of drug trafficking.

Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze said at a traditional Monday briefing that a trial of Gordadze will be held on Tuesday morning. She said case of Gordadze positively ends within the formal agreement with the state prosecutor, and there are sufficient grounds that Gordadze is not sentenced to death penalty.

"Moreover, there are extenuating circumstances, which the investigation bodies were notified of in time. This woman has a young child, and we hope that this fact will be taken into account and penalty will be limited to a small term," Kalandadze said.

A few days ago it became known that Kohtashvili was sentenced to six years imprisonment. Drug trafficking in Malaysia is punished by the death penalty by hanging.
