The newly-elected Libyan interim prime minister, Abdel Rahim al-Kib, pledges to build a nation that respects human rights in the wake of the fall of the country's former dictatorial regime, Press TV reported.

Shortly after his election to the post, al-Kib told a news conference in the capital Tripoli on Monday, "We guarantee that we are going to build a nation that respects human rights and does not accept the abuse of human rights. But we need time," AFP reported.

The little-known academic with background in electrical engineering was elected to the position by the National Transitional Council (NTC), the country's interim leaders, by 26 votes out of 51 on Monday.

He also talked about the NTC fighters who captured and killed the longtime former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi on October 20.

"We are very aware that our brothers, the revolutionaries, the fighters, share the same opinion as us. They also believe that the stability of the country is extremely important," he said.

The NTC declared the country's 'liberation' three days after Gaddafi's death and announced a roadmap for a new Libya, which envisioned a 20-month countdown to a general election.

According to the roadmap, the NTC is supposed to hand over power to an elected assembly within eight months. The assembly would then be responsible for writing the constitution.
