The Syrian government on Tuesday issued an apology for an attack on the Jordanian embassy by supporters of President Bashar al-Assad, according to Spokesman of the Jordanian Foreign Ministry Mohammad Kayed, DPA reported.

Dozens of Syrian citizens demonstrated in front of the Jordanian embassy on Monday after King Abdullah II urged al-Assad to step down in an interview with the BBC.

"The apology was made by the Deputy Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad during a meeting with Arab ambassadors in Damascus," Kayed was quoted as saying by the official Petra news agency.

Mikdad also apologised for similar attacks on other Arab diplomatic missions in Damascus, he added.

"The Syrian official promised beefing up security around the Arab embassies to ensure non-repetition of what happened," Kayed said.

The harassment of Arab embassies in the Syrian capital followed the Arab League decision earlier this week to suspend Syria's membership after the Syrian regime failed to stop its bloody crackdown on pro-reform protesters.
