Hezbollah escalates its claims for anti-Israel rocket capability

The Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah on Monday hinted it could escalate its rocket attack capability against Israel, dpa reported.

Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, in an interview with Lebanese television al-Mayadeen TV, said his group "does not need chemical or nuclear weapons, but inside Israel there are targets that if hit can achieve the same results."

The Hezbollah leader, who smiled as he said this, appeared to be making a reference to Israel's nuclear reactors as targets.

"Hezbollah's rockets can reach all its targets in Israel," he said.

"I tell the Israelis that Hezbollah can target their electricity plants, which will cause them huge economic loss," the Shiite Cleric said.

In 2006, Hezbollah and Israel fought a 33-day-long devastating war that left 1,200 Lebanese and 160 Israelis dead. Hezbollah since then is believed to have enhanced it arsenal with the help of its two main allies in the region, Iran and Syria.

In reference to the ongoing conflict in neighboring Syria, Nasrallah called on the Syrian opposition "not destroy their country and stop the bloodshed and the killing of Syrian army troops."

He added that the only way to end the Syrian crisis is by working on a "political solution."

"The world community should impose on both rival parties in Syria a ceasefire fire and then call for a dialogue," he said.
