( dpa ) - Kenya's political rivals agreed Thursday to meet for the first time since disputed presidential polls swept Kenya into a storm of violence that has left some 700 people killed and 250,000 displaced, the United Nations said.

Mediator and former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan was set to meet President Mwai Kibaki and defeated presidential candidate Raila Odinga Thursday afternoon.

"Today ... there will be a meeting amongst Kofi Annan, President Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga at the office of the president," the UN said in a statement.

Annan arrived in the country Tuesday night and has pledged to find a solution to the political impasse.
