Afghan forces and NATO- led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops on Tuesday launched cleanup operation against Taliban militants in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province, an official said, Xinhua reported.

"The joint operation was launched Tuesday morning in Chardara district to clear the areas from militants," an official with Press Department of Germany's civilian-military unit the Provincial Reconstruction Team who introduced his name only as Weber told Xinhua.

According to the official, troops had engaged militants in the area but failed to say if there were any casualties on Taliban or the joint forces.

Chardara district has been branded as Taliban stronghold in Kunduz province.

Taliban militants, whose regime was toppled in a U.S.-led military campaign in late 2001, have yet to make comments.

Kunduz and the neighboring Baghlan province have been the scene of Taliban-led insurgency in over the past one year.
