Two Tibetan Buddhist monks have set fire to themselves in a restive area of south-western China, in the latest of more than 30 self-immolation protests against the government, reports said on Saturdaydpa reported.

Tenpa Dargye, 22, and Choemi Palten, 21, set fire to themselves on Friday in Maerkang town, or Barkham in Tibetan, in Sichuan's Aba area, London-based Free Tibet and US-based Radio Free Asia said.

Police took away the monks immediately after the protest and the extent of their injuries was unclear, the reports said.

Both monks had studied at the nearby Kirti Monastery in Aba. Many of the 31 other self-immolations reported in Tibetan areas since 2009 occurred at or near the monastery.

At least 23 of the earlier protesters died, according to reports by Tibetan exiles and Chinese state media.

The Chinese government has tightened security in most Tibetan areas this year after an escalation of the self-immolations and other protests, many of them by monks.
