Report: UN to meet on North Korean rocket launch

The UN Security Council may meet Friday to discuss North Korea's rocket launch, dpa quoted the US television network CNN as reporting.

Citing two UN officials and a US diplomat, the report said the 15-nation planned a meeting Friday morning. But there was no official announcement from UN headquarters in New York about the meeting.

The council president, US Ambassador Susan Rice, said on Wednesday that if North Korea were to launch the rocket, it would be a "blatant violation" of UN resolutions, which prohibit North Korea from using ballistic missile technology.

The council imposed two sets of sanctions against North Korea in 2006 and 2009 after that country test-fired nuclear devices. In 2009, North Korea fired short-range missiles after detonating a nuclear device.
