Boston heightens security after marathon bombing

Armed police were to patrol Boston and search bags on public transport Tuesday, a day after two bombs killed three people and injured nearly 150 near the finishing line of the city's marathon, a news report said.

The city would be largely open for business, but the crime scene around Copley Square would remain sealed-off. State troopers, National Guard units and municipal SWAT teams would be out in force, dpa reported according to the Boston Globe.

"People returning to work tomorrow will notice an increased police presence in the city," the mayor's office said. "They should not be alarmed by this presence of National Guard and other armed officers at key points on the city."

Some churches were planning to open their doors Tuesday to people seeking solace, the report said, with a candlelight vigil planned for 8 pm (0000 Wednesday GMT) at the Arlington Street Church.
