Baku says appeal issued on behalf of Amnesty International groundless

Baku, Azerbaijan, June 11

By Ilkin Izzet - Trend:

The issue on the Amnesty International was discussed by international press, and the bottom line here is that Azerbaijan's National Olympic Committee didn't accredit the representative of the Amnesty International, said the Azerbaijani president's aide for public and political affairs, Ali Hasanov.

He made the remarks June 11, at a press conference on the European Games, held with participation of the local and foreign journalists.

"I conducted an investigation in this regard, contacted relevant structures and learned that the name of the person, who was willing to come to Azerbaijan from Amnesty International, was not registered," said Hasanov. "Neither BEGOC nor any appropriate structure for visa issuance has anyone's name from Amnesty International."

"Then it was revealed that the persons representing Amnesty International, bypassing, that is illegally on behalf of various newspapers, wanted to come to Azerbaijan. An attempt to illegally visit Azerbaijan was foiled. Therefore, the appeal disseminated on behalf of the Amnesty International, has no grounds," Hasanov said.
