Kazakhstan's incumbent president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, told reporters after voting at the country's snap presidential election, that his first decision, in the event of his victory in the election, will be to create a commission to implement five institutional reforms, RIA Novosti reported Apr. 26.
Nazarbayev's election platform is based on a proposal to conduct five institutional reforms, designed "to prevent the global crisis's negative impact on state-building, to maintain the development rates, to create conditions for a new leap and to continue to move towards joining the 30 most developed countries of the world."
"If Kazakhs will once again trust me, the first decision will be to create a commission to implement the five institutional reforms... It will have five subgroups," said Nazarbayev.
He noted that the said reforms will cover various spheres of life in Kazakhstan; their content was discussed in details during his election campaign.
Nazarbayev also said the implementation of these reforms will be "the second phase of the country's development."
He went on to note that the current snap election is "a very important historic event," adding that the voters "have the choice to choose their future, to assess the authorities' work."
"Including my own work," Nazarbayev added.
He also expressed hope that Kazakhs "will vote for stability of the state, for their and their children's future."
Three candidates are taking part in the election: Nazarbayev, who has been the country's president since 1989, Turgun Syzdykov, the secretary of the central committee of the Communist People's Party, and Abelgazi Kusainov, the chairman of the Trade Unions Federation.
The voting will take place from 07:00 to 20:00 (UTC/GMT +6 hours).
In the country's four western regions - the West Kazakhstan, Atyrau, Aktobe and Mangystau regions - the polling stations will be closed an hour later due to the time difference.
