Kyrgyzstan's Prime Minister Almazbek Atambayev met with U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Susan Elliott in Bishkek Monday, agreeing on maintaining security in the ex-Soviet nation and resuming bilateral consultations, Xinhua reported.
According to the State Council Information Office, Elliott suggested that both sides cooperate in tackling drug trafficking, terrorism and religious extremists in Kyrgyzstan.
Atambayev said that the two countries should resume bilateral consultations, "where we can discuss more concretely all urgent questions that the two governments are concerned."
Elliott voiced support for Atambayev's suggestion, saying that the United States would like to resume bilateral consultations at the end of March or April.
The senior U.S. official, who is in charge of South and Central Asian Affairs, came to Kyrgyzstan for a press conference on Afghanistan.
The two countries' consultations were suspended in April 2010, when the interim government headed by Roza Otunbayeva came to power in Kyrgyzstan.
