Uzbekistan, Tashkent, Dec. 20 / Trend, D. Azizov /

In Uzbekistan, amendments to the laws "On elections of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan" and "On elections to regional, district and city Councils of People's Deputies" related to the further provision of freedom of choice and the development of electoral law have entered into force in Uzbekistan.

Laws on amendments to electoral laws were adopted by the lower house, Legislative Chamber of the Parliament in early November and were approved by the upper house, Senate, in early December. These laws were published on Thursday and according to their final article, shall enter into force on their date of publication.

In particular, these electoral laws are complemented by standards regarding the prevention of election campaigning not only on Election Day, but also the day prior to voting. A ban on the publication of opinion polls, forecasts of election results and the results of other research related to ongoing elections, including their discussion in the media on and within three days after Election Day was also implemented.

Changes made to the law clarify the rules governing election coverage in private media. Activation of these laws will provide greater transparency and openness in elections, election campaigns and in general national reform policy, given the country's diversity of opinions.

According to the articles on the legal terms of the payment for air time, the area defined by non-state media involved in the election campaign and other requirements must be equal and the same for all candidates and political parties.

The current law also clearly sets the timing, manner and procedures for early voting, and the possibility of the formation of polling stations in places of detention. It also establishes the right of observers to attend the Conference of the Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan on Elections to the Legislative Chamber. This should in turn, according to experts, provide greater openness and transparency in the election of deputies.

It is expected that the introduction of changes and amendments to electoral law will ensure greater transparency and openness in electoral processes, increase the effectiveness of election campaigns and election commissions.
