Baku, Azerbaijan, Apr.13

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Iran and Tajikistan plan to ink a rail transport agreement, Tajik state railway company deputy director Bahrom Shodiov stated.

A delegation of Tajik transport officials is in Iran to discuss ways to boost rail infrastructure and rail transport ties between the two countries, Iran's Fars news agency reported on April 13.

The two sides are planning to sign an agreement in this respect.

Iran and Tajikistan transit their goods via each other's soil to India, Pakistan, and the Gulf states.

A number of Iranian companies are currently implementing rail projects in Tajikistan.

Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines Chairman Gholam-Hosseini Shafeyi has said that transportation problems at the Tajik border are the main obstacle to boosting the two countries' trade ties.

In October 2012, Iran and Tajikistan signed a memorandum of understanding to expand relations between their free trade zones.

According to Tajikistan's chamber of commerce, Iran-Tajikistan trade hit $250 million in 2012. The bilateral trade amounted to $229 million in the first nine months of the 2013.
