Hazardous tsunami waves are possible in Central America after a strong magnitude-7.2 earthquake struck near El Salvador, the US Pacific Tsunami warning centre says, ABC reported.
The quake struck at a depth of 33 kilometres, some 154 kilometres south-southwest of Puerto Triunfo in El Salvador, the US Geological Survey reported, shaking several Central American countries, just as a hurricane barrelled through the region.
Tsunami waves are possible within 300 kilometres of the epicentre, the tsunami warning said.
El Salvador emergency services took to Twitter to report there was no immediate damage at a national level.
