Azerbaijani Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies has started negotiations with the countries of the region on hosting of their Internet addresses in the root DNS-server Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ICANN, located in Azerbaijan, the Minister of Communications and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov said on Thursday.
According to the minister the launch of the ICANN root DNS-server in Azerbaijan is a significant event. Along with the technological aspect, the project also has a legal basis, as Internet addresses of the countries will be managed directly from the server.
"Everything was done to put the system into operation, and today jointly with ICANN we are holding negotiations with a number of countries to host their web addresses in our center, for Internet addresses of the countries in the region, registered in the U.S. and Europe, to be redirected to the root server of ICANN. The main aspect in this issue is the trust of countries to Azerbaijan, and the requirements of the ICANN, " the minister said.
The root DNS server is a key part of the Internet infrastructure and the launch of a next root server will contribute to global security, improving sustainability and stability of the global domain name system, and a global network in the region.

Today the DNS root system is distributed throughout the world. A number of system servers use a technology called Anycast. This allows one server to have multiple installations in different geographical locations. Anycast is used to reduce the response time and load balancing root DNS-servers.
DNS root servers contain information about top-level domains, pointing to DNS-servers that support each of these domains. The main DNS root servers are managed by different organizations working in coordination with ICANN.
