Military Component not Priority of Current Cooperation under GUAM – Secretary General
Ukraine, Kiev / corr Trend Z.Novosvitskiy / The military component is not a priority for cooperation under the GUAM, Valeriy Chechelashvili, the Secretary General of GUAM, said in talks with journalists in Kiev.
In reply to question on formation of peacemaking contingent of GUAM member-countries, Chechelashvili said that he agrees upon every ideas in this respect. "However, journalists, rather participants in the talks speak of that within GUAM format," he said. GUAM is a large-scale organization for regional cooperation and envisages importance of interaction in all fields, including the military sector.
"This issue has grounds to be put for the GUAM's consideration, through presently we are focused on other priorities, particularly, formation of attractive, civil area for cooperation," Chechelashvili said.
With respect to the organization's contribution in the resolution of conflicts in the territory of GUAM, the Secretary General said it was the mobilization of the international community's support to GUAM's efforts separately and jointly promote search of peace ways to the settlement of these conflicts.
