Azerbaijani Opposition Party Chairman Resigns

Azerbaijan, Baku, 7 April / Trend corr. I.Alizade / The chairman of the National Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (NDPA) has resigned.

"Iskandar Hamidov, chairman of (NDPA) tendered his resignation during the last meeting of NDPA Political Council. Members of the Political Council were not in favour of Hamidov's decision," Yavar Huseyn, NDPA Deputy Chairman, stated to Trend on 7 April.

The Azerbaijan National Democrat Party, formerly known as the Grey Wolves Party, is a political party in Azerbaijan, a branch of the Grey Wolves in Azerbaijan. Isgandar Hamidov, a party member, was the Minister of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party government. The party was banned in 1995 and Hamidov was imprisoned, however, the party is functioning currently with Hamidov as their party leader. The party is known for its fiery nationalist style and favors a military solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Hamidov was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment but served his sentence from 1995 to 2004 after being pardoned by the order of President in 2004.

According to Huseyn, Hamidov explained that he wanted to open the way for someone else to lead the party. The new chairman of the party will be elected during the next meeting," he stated. However, Hamidov will not leave the party or its policy.

Huseyn stated that the party was preparing for the next meeting and a special Organization Committee was established chaired by Oktai Khalil.
