Blackmail Committed against Azadlig Newspaper Journalist

Azerbaijan, Baku, 5 April / Trend corr. S.Ilhamizi / The Prosecutor departments committed a blackmail against Agil Khalil, a journalist of the Azadlig newspaper, Azar Ahmadov, the director of Azadlig newspaper, stated during the press-conference.

On 13 March, at 8.00pm Agil Khalil, a journalist of the Azadlig newspaper, was stabbed in the chest by unknown assailants. He was immediately taken to the Clinical Medical Centre where he was operated on.

Ahmadov stated that the officials of the Investigation Department of Republican Prosecutor office on Heinous Crimes visited Khalil in Kurdamir on 3 April. Khalil and members of his family testified in Kurdamir-based Prosecutor office. According to Khalil, the officials of the Department committed blackmail against him to testify. "They stated that a gay testified that he had a connection with Khalil and gave an interview in one of the TVs. The investigators demanded from Khalil to admit that he was injured either by gays or by his colleges. Otherwise, the interview given by the gay will be demonstrated on channels," Ahmadov said.

Ahmadov added that the investigators had copies of telephone messages written between Khalil and the gay. However, according to Ahmadov, the messages were written two year ago when Khalil serves military service and did not have a mobile.

Ahmadov stated that Khalil testifies in the Investigation Department on the heinous crimes.

Vugar Aliyev, the chief of Prosecutor General's Office press-service, denied the information and stated that the investigation is in the process and all guilty persons would be made answerable.
