Members of Untraditional Religious Group Detained in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Barda, 25 April / Trend S. Jaliloglu/ "Members of an untraditional religious group Jehovah Witnesses were detained in Barda," Agalar Maharramov, head of the Barda Region Police, said to Trend on 25 April.

The State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations reported that the Jehovah Witnesses was registered only to operate in the capital city and were not permitted to operate in the regions.

According to Maharramov, Barda Police discovered that members of the Jehovah Witness were attracting people to the community through deception under the direction of Nasiba Guliyeva, an English teacher in the Barda Secondary School-2. Religious books which are prohibited in the country were seized during the operation.

Barda is located 360km south-west of Baku.
