Attorney Demands Jail Sentence for Man Charged with Stabbing Oppositional Journalist of Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 14 July/ Trend , corr K. Zarbaliyeva/ The attorney demanded two-year jail sentence for the man charged with stabbing journalist of Azadlig newspaper of Azerbaijan Agil Khalil with knife.

The public prosecutor made a speech in the court sitting held in Nasimi District Court on 14 July and said that the accusations toward Sergey Strekalin were proved by the court investigation.

The attorney demanded to sentence Strekalin to two-year of jail in the general reformatory.

The writer for Azadlig daily Agil Khalil was stabbed with knife near the buildings located in 523 str Ayna Sultanova by unknown people on 13 March.

Khalilov said that he was stabbed because of the incident that took place in Zeytun Bagi and his journalistic activity and he added that he was followed by two men. 

The Attorney General's Office said that the journalist was stabbed by the homosexuals, that is, by Sergey Strekalin, with whom he had sexual relations earlier.

Strekalin was arrested with charges of inflicting injury to health deliberately (127.1) and storing drugs illegally (234.1) in line with the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. 

The criminal case filed over beating journalist in Zeytun Bagi has been closed.

The lawyer of Agil Khalil demanded justification for Strekalin saying that he is not guilty for stabbing Agil Khalil.

Khalil also protested against the speech of the attorney and said that it is not Strekalin who stabbed Agil him with knife.

The lawyer of Strekalin asked to give his client other punishment rather than jail sentence.

The court will issue a decision on 15 July.
