It is necessary to conduct enlightenment activities in Azerbaijan to raise interest in the marriage contracts, said the State Committee for Family, Women and Children.
It needs to carry out enlightenment work amongst citizens regarding the benefits of the marriage contract, and the consequences of the failure to conclude the contract should be explained to people, the head of department on the family of the State Committee Gulnara Mammadov told Trend.
Noting that it is necessary to create the conditions for civilized solution of problems after the divorce, the head of the department added that those who marry would be interested in marriage contract after being acquainted with the benefits of the marriage contract.
According to the official representative of the Committee, conducted enlightenment work has yielded positive results, and compared with previous years, an increasing has been recorded in the number of marriage contracts.
According to her, in 2007 the figure was 16, in 2008 - 33, 2009 - more than 60 contracts.
The marriage contract is an agreement between couples getting married and defines the spouses' property rights and obligations during marriage or upon divorce. The marriage contract is prepared in writing and approved by attorneys. A marriage contract defines the rights and responsibilities for both parties' mutual maintenance, the sharing of household expenditure and each other's income and it determines the rights for the division of property between the parties in a divorce settlement. Marriage contracts apply to spouses' existing and future properties. The contract can be signed before or after the marriage; it enters into force when the parties enter into marriage. The contract defines the legal organization of the property.
According to the head of the department, sometimes some people mistakenly think that if one party requires a marriage contract, it is regarded as a mistrust of the opposite side.
"In our families when parents divorce, children are used as a tool for certain purposes. It deals a serious blow to the psyche of children. If the parties sign a marriage contract, then the divorce for women and children will change for the better," said the head of the department.
