Lollobrigida wedding 'called off'

(news.bbc.co.uk) The fiance of Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida has called off their wedding, according to reports in Spanish magazine Hola.

Lollobrigida, 79, was due to marry Spanish boyfriend Javier Rigau Rafols, who is 34 years her junior, in January.

Rigau blamed "constant", "unfounded" and "unlawful" media interference, according to Hola.

Lollobrigida, who starred in 1955 film The World's Most Beautiful Woman, had been dating Rigau for 22 years.

In a statement, Rigau said he "will always love and respect" the actress, Hola reported.

The couple were originally due to marry in New York last month but the wedding was rescheduled for January in Rome.

News of the intended wedding had featured heavily in the Italian press.

Her screen career, which started in the 1940s, includes Trapeze (1956) and Come September (1961) which won a Golden Globe award. Lollobrigida worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood such as Frank Sinatra and Sean Connery.

Lollobrigida divorced her first husband, Yugoslavian doctor Milko Skofic, after 22 years in 1971. They had one son together.
