Allegation to Institute Criminal Case against Newspaper Collaborators to Appeal

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend К.Zarbaliyeva / The Sumgayit State University appealed to the court demanding to institute a criminal case against the editor and collaborators of the 'Dirchalish namina' (For Renaissance) newspaper.

According to Elchin Mammadov, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper, a group of students from the physics, mathematics and chemistry departments informed the editorial office of evidence against bribery which had occurred within the University.

Hasanov struggled to the office of Mahammad Akhmedov, the Pro-rector of the University. The collaborator of the newspaper was faced with bribery and resulted in violence; his Dictaphone and mobile were broken. Hasanov, as a result was injured.

Mammadov and Hasanov were taken to the Sumgayit Police Department and were fined in compliance with Article 296 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code.

According to Mammadov, the editorial office lodged a complaint to the Police Department, the prosecutor and the Court charged the Pro-rector of the University in compliance with Article163 (obstacle in the professional functioning of journalists) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.
