Turkmenistan to begin sowing of raw cotton

Issue of sowing of raw cotton in the coming days was discussed at a recent governmental meeting with the participation of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, statement of the Turkmen government said on Monday.

According to information, "daikhan enterprises are fully equipped with high-quality cotton seeds, as well as efficient agricultural machinery".

The President noted the need to create all conditions for successful operation of farmers and efficient operation of farm machinery, to take measures to ensure a clear and smooth functioning of all parts of this important campaign.

Berdimuhamedov gave instructions for efficient use of water during irrigation of farmland, for integration of science and practice through close cooperation and concerted actions of scientists, agronomists, leaseholders and machine operators.

In 2011 Turkmenistan procured more than 1.05 million tons of raw cotton. Traditionally, the country exports it to China, Russia, Britain, South Korea, Turkey, Iran, Indonesia, Singapore, Ukraine and the Baltic countries.

In 2010 contractual obligations were overfulfiled, about 1.300 million tons of cotton were collected instead of the planned 1.05 million.

There are 36 cotton mills under the State Concern Turkmenpagta (Turkmencotton). Raw is grown in five provinces (regions) of the country: Akhal, Mary, Lebap, Dashoguz and Balkan. Harvesting is usually carried out from August to October, last year it was held also in November.

Cotton production (cotton, lint, uluk) is implemented through the State Commodity and Raw Materials Exchange of Turkmenistan.
