By Fatih Karimov - Trend: An Iranian MP has revealed a huge rent-seeking by a company in importing DL-Methionine, which is used as a supplement in pet food.
The company has been the exclusive importer of DL-Methionine for a long time, he said, adding that the company used to import DL-Methionine and sell it at much higher prices in the free market, Iran's Tasnim news agency quoted MP Mohammad Sadat Ebrahimi as saying on June 25.
While DL-Methionine should have been sold at 69,000 rials per kilogram, the company had priced it at 300,000 rials, he noted.
The exclusive right for importing Methionine by the company has been canceled, he added.
USD exchange rate is currently about 32,000 rials in Iran.
Methionine is one of the 10-plus essential amino acids that are required by both the cat and dog." The Methionine supplement is called DL-Methionine.
Methionine can be found naturally in meat and fish pet food ingredients.
