Wheat harvesting wraps up in Turkmenistan

The harvesting of wheat has almost completed in Turkmenistan, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at an expanded meeting of the government, the State Agency "Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary" reported.

"The harvest shows that our country has ensured its food security," the message quoted the head of state as saying.

Surplus grain is planned to be exported.

The head of state drew the attention of the relevant senior officials to the fact that scientific institutions should work closely on the issues of development of agriculture, and especially water supply.

It is necessary to widely introduce water-efficient technologies in production and actively apply the best practices of other countries in this area, the president of Turkmenistan said.

It is possible to obtain good yields of crops by using water resources rationally, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stressed.

It was reported a the end of June that, more than one million ton of wheat was delivered to the purchasing centers of Turkmenistan. Some 1.6 million tons of grain is planned to be harvested from 760,000 hectares of land this year including 450,000 tons - in Akhal velayat (region), 380,000 tons – in Mary velayat, 350,000 tons – in Lebap velayat, 300,000 tons – in Dashoguz velayat, and 120,000 tons in the Balkan velayat. Some 1,700 grain combine harvesters of John Deere and CLAAS models have been involved in the work.

Turkmenistan has previously been awarded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations with a special prize for achievements in the field of ensuring the food security.
