By Sara Israfilbayova– Trend:

There are plans to hold a meeting in Paris in the beginning of the next year to consider the possibility for Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR to join the initiative to reduce methane emissions during production, the company told Trend.

The company said that this initiative was previously supported by a number of international energy companies (BP, Eni, ExxonMobil, Repsol, Shell, Statoil, Total, Wintershall, Gazprom and others).

Over the past years, SOCAR has actively participated in global initiatives of international organizations and transnational energy companies in order to protect the environment and reduce gas emissions to the atmosphere.

The company also carries out a number of unilateral measures as part of corporate social responsibility in Azerbaijan, such as the purification of industrial waters produced during oil extraction, the cleaning and recultivation of land on the Absheron Peninsula contaminated with oil in the Soviet period, etc.

In 2015, SOCAR joined the World Bank (WB) and UN initiative, which aims to eliminate associated gas flaring at oil production sites by 2030.

In 2017, SOCAR reduced carbon dioxide gas emissions under its projects to 5.891 million tons. Since 2010, harmful emissions have been reduced by 45 percent.
