US allocates financial aid for Georgia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec.29

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

US President Donald Trump has signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act 2021 which includes $132.02 million in financial aid for Georgia, Trend reports via Georgian media.

The bill was previously approved by the US Congress.

The document says that Georgia is a strategic ally of the United States, and the agreement continues to support the Georgian people's efforts to strengthen democracy, governance, and the rule of law.

The document reads that not later than 90 days after enactment of the act, the secretary of state should submit a report to the Committees on Appropriations detailing actions taken by the government of Georgia since January 1, 2020, to strengthen democratic institutions, including through recent elections, combat corruption and ensure that rule of law in the private sector and the foreign investment climate meet international standards.

The United States established diplomatic relations with Georgia in 1992 following Georgia’s 1991 independence from the Soviet Union. Since 1991, Georgia has made impressive progress fighting corruption, developing modern state institutions, and enhancing global security.

The strength of US-Georgia relations is codified in the 2009 U.S.-Georgia Charter on Strategic Partnership. The US-Georgia Strategic Partnership Commission is comprised of four bilateral working groups on priority areas identified in the Charter: democracy; defense and security; economic, trade, and energy issues; and people-to-people and cultural exchanges.
