Turkmen president: Power engineering is a CIS cooperation priority

Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, Sept. 14 / Trend H. Hasanov /

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov held a meeting with chairman of the executive committee CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev, local media reported on Friday.

According to the information the president stressed that the establishment of close direct contacts in the fuel-energy and fuel-economic sectors are the absolute priority of cooperation of the organisation's member states interested in the effective implementation of the existing impressive resource and economic potential.

President Berdimuhamedov said that having great oil and gas reserves, Turkmenistan intends to supply natural resources for the benefit of mankind. The country is always willing to consider proposals from its potential partners interested in joint projects for the development and production of hydrocarbons and construction of the industrial infrastructure.

The president pointed to the possible common ground for mutual interests.

Cooperation in the field of fuel and energy complexes is the strategic direction in the relationship between the countries. Turkmen gas goes to Russia through the Middle Asia - Centre pipeline through the territories of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Customer JSC Gazprom (Russia), signed an agreement with Turkmenistan on gas supplies for 25 years in 2003.

Currently, the Middle Asia - Centre pipeline does not work at full capacity. Russia under the influence of the global recession of 2010 reduced the purchase of up to 10 billion cubic meters of gas which is four times less than in 2008.
