Uzbek Ministry of Energy talks on implementation of new gas production project (Exclusive)

Implementation of the project for the reconstruction of the underground gas storage (UGS) facility Gazli in Uzbekistan will meet the needs of the domestic market, increase natural gas exports in winter, restore gas production, and increase oil production at the field, a spokesperson of Uzbek Ministry of Energy told Trend in an interview.

The project also envisages creation of 286 new jobs.

Recently, Trend reported that Joint Venture Gazli Gas Storage LLC is reconstructing the largest underground gas storage facility in Gazli, Uzbekistan, worth $ 850 million. The JV was established by Uzbekneftegaz JSC and Forus JSC (Russia) to implement the project aimed at Increasing gas storage volumes in the Gazli UGS facility to 10.0 billion cubic meters, alongside with additional exploration and additional development of gas horizons and oil rims of the Gazli field.

The Energy Ministry stated that the Gazli UGS facility is used for pumping and storage in the summer, for the uninterrupted supply of natural gas to consumers in Uzbekistan in the winter, and for the gas export.

The project provides for a gradual increase in the active storage volume of UGS from 3.0 to 10.0 billion cubic meters to increase gas exports to the east in winter periods.

The project implementation in the period 2019-2024 is foreseen in two stages. Stage I (2019-2021) provides for an increase in the volume of UGS up to 6.0 billion cubic meters; and Stage II (from 2021) provides for an increase to 10.0 billion cubic meters until 2024.
