Project on expansion of Azeri gas storages estimated at $120m

In 2005 around 1,025bn cu m of gas was pumped into the underground gas storage that allowed provision of the population with gas without any problems in the winter, Trend reports referring to Alikhan Malikov, the head of Azerigas JSC.

Azerigas is working on the project for expansion of gas storages. Azerbaijan uses the gas storages Garadag and Kalmaz. Their total capacity comprises approximately 1.1bn cu m of gas. As a result of the done work the capacity of the Garadagh gas storage is supposed to be increased up to 2.2bn cu m of gas, Kalmaz - 1.2bn cu m of gas.

The Company holds negotiations on financing of the projects. They are supposed to be implemented over 2 years. The World Bank (WB) showed interest in financing of the project. The preliminary value is $120m. A part of the funds may be granted by Azerbaijan. The gas storages are envisaged for reception and keeping of increasing amount of gas in the country.
