Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan May Continue Talks on Development of Kapaz Field: Minister

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend Capital A.Ismaylova / The Minister of Industry and Energy of Azerbaijan, Natig Aliyev, does not exclude the possibility of developing the disputable field of Kapaz in the Caspian Sea jointly with Turkmenistan.

"I do not think that the issue of developing the field will present problems (between the two sides)," the Minister said on 11 June in Baku.

According to him, the development of the field is difficult and is linked with the solution of the issue of the legal status of the Caspian Sea.

"Formerly we were involved in this issue, but the negotiations with Turkmenistan did not yield any results. I hope that the talks will continue," Aliyev said.

According to him, the key question between the sides is the division of the Caspian Sea. "The method (division of sea) has already been used between Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia and on the basis of it, we should continue talks with Turkmenistan," the Minister said.

According to Aliyev, the mineable reserves of the Kapaz field equal 50mln t. The field had been opened during the Soviet regime by Azerbaijani oil men. It is located in the medial line between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.
