BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 11. One of the most significant outcomes of COP28 is related to energy efficiency, the Deputy Minister of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and CEO of COP29, Elnur Soltanov said at a preliminary meeting for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (Pre-COP29) in Baku, Trend reports.

"As we developed the energy initiatives for COP29 with the Ministry of Energy, we were truly inspired by the progress made on this particular initiative, including the tripling of renewable energy sources and doubling energy efficiency.

Many of the energy initiatives focus on what we refer to as grid modernization, as well as establishing local and international green energy corridors and storage solutions.

Additionally, I want to highlight that Azerbaijan has begun fulfilling its commitments under this initiative. Last year, we launched the largest solar power plant in the region.

Our potential for renewable energy is set to grow significantly, potentially more than tripling. Regarding green corridors, we are taking a leading role in this area, and I believe this concept will become one of Azerbaijan's key legacies," he stated.

To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Azerbaijan in November this year. The decision was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Within two weeks, Baku, having become the center of the world, will host about 70,000-80,000 foreign guests.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for Conference of Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are parties to the convention. Unless the parties have decided otherwise, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
