BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 11. Significant progress has been made in discussions on methane reduction during the Pre-COP meetings, the Senior Advisor to the US President for Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation John Podesta said at a briefing in Baku, Trend reports.
"I think we have clearly defined our priorities, but during the Pre-COP29 meetings, we aim to ensure that the historic results of COP28, referred to as the UAE consensus, are maintained. We have an agreement with China and Azerbaijan to hold a methane summit during COP29. We aim to work in partnership to ensure that countries commit to new obligations for reducing gases such as methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, and other greenhouse gases. We want to conclude this round of meetings, known as Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, to ensure the proper functioning of carbon markets with a high degree of integration. I think we have made progress on this topic at this meeting.
Lastly, as I mentioned, one of the most important outcomes of this COP will be the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance (NCQG). This continues the annual commitment of $100 billion agreed upon in the Paris Agreement," he said.
