Turkey, Tajikistan discuss situation in Afghanistan

The situation in Afghanistan and ways of its stabilizing was discussed at the meeting of Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Foreign Minister of Tajikistan Khamrokhon Zarifi in Istanbul, CA-NEWS reported referring to the Tajik Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"Zarifi thanked the President of Turkey for the excellent organization of the Istanbul conference on Afghanistan, "Security and Cooperation in the heart of Asia" and for providing an opportunity to express the position of Tajikistan on issues related to security and stable development of the region," the Ministry reported.

The Foreign Minister of Tajikistan stressed the importance of such conferences, which serve as a platform for the expression of national positions on current issues, as well as provide an opportunity to provide substantial assistance in the early stabilization of the situation in Afghanistan.

"Tajikistan, which has the longest border with Afghanistan, common linguistic roots, traditions, cultural and historical ties, strongly contributes to peace and stability on this troubled land. At the moment, the Republic of Tajikistan successfully implemented several projects in the fields of electricity and communications together with Afghanistan," the Foreign Ministry stressed.

Zarifi briefed on the meeting with Turkish businessmen and arrangements achieved during the meeting.

"The President of the Republic of Turkey noted the existing potential for cooperation between the two countries and stressed the importance of expanding cooperation in trade and economy and energy sector. Gul invited the Tajik side to consider opening of an additional Turkish Airlines flights to Dushanbe," said a statement of the Foreign Ministry.

During the meeting, Zarifi handed over the invitation of Prsident of Tajikistan Emomalii Rahmon to visit the country at any convenient time to the President of Turkey. In turn, Gul invited Rahmon to visit Turkey to celebrate "Shabi Arus" - spinning dervish festival, celebrated in early December.
