Number of Internet users totals 2.4 million people in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan, Tashkent, Jan. 15/ Trend T. Zhukov/ The number of Internet users totaled 2.4 million people in 2008, Trend correspondent in Tashkent reported.

The speed of access to the international information networks was increased by 2.3 times in 2008, the Telecommunication Technologies and Services Department of Uzbek Communication and Information Agency (UCIA) told Trend . Presently, it totals 515 Mbit/s.

The number of web sites in national domain .uz was increased by 31.7% in 2008. As of Jan. 1, 2009 7,579 active domains were registered in national domain .uz, according to UCIA information.

According to Uzbek domain zone administration, 3,853 users were registered in 2008. The number of interactive state run services rendered via web sites of ministries and departments was increased in 2008 in 2.8 times. The access to Internet and network is carried out via dedicated lines using xDSL, RadioEthernet and Dial-Up. "Uzbektelecom" joint stock company has already launched to realize WiMax project.

Seven official registrars of UZ domain operate in the territory of Republic. The cost of domain registration varies from $16-25 in Uzbekistan. The administrator of the second level UZ domain is Computerization and IT Developing Center (Uzinfocom) under UCIA.

The national domain UZ of upper level was created in April 1995. A private person was an owner for some years. In August 2001 Internet Assigned Numbers Authority conveyed management of national domain UZ to Euracom Equipment GmBH German company represented by Tomas Ltd in Uzbekistan. In March 2003 domain UZ was nationalized by Uzbek government.
